High winds from overnight storm cause widespread power outages

Amarillo, TX - High winds from last night's storm caused widespread power outages in Canyon and Amarillo.

Last night over three thousand customers lost power. Xcel Energy crews from Amarillo and surrounding counties worked to repair 10 poles that snapped in the strait line winds.

Other areas were affected and crews are continuing to work to restore power to all customers. Homes in Canyon and south Amarillo were the hardest hit.

Residents say the worst of the storm came at at about 2 a.m. causing the most damage and knocking out power.

Updates from Xcel Energy:

5:55 p.m.
The updated customer count without power is down to 336 customers in both Amarillo and Canyon.

Customers still without power may have sustained property damage and we Xcel Energy needs you to have their individual electrical facilities checked and repaired by an electrician before Xcel can restore power.

5:27 p.m.
We now have our outage count down to 336 customers in Amarillo and Canyon. We estimate that all customers who can take power can be restored by 10 p.m. Some customers may have sustained property damage and will need their electrical facilities to be repaired by an electrician and inspected before we can reconnect them.

3:22 p.m.
Our current customer count of those without power is around 600 customers, with 350-400 of those in the Canyon area where it appears we had the most storm damage.  As our Amarillo jobs are completed, we’re moving more resources into Canyon to boost the restoration teams we already have working there.
