Suspect Arrested in 2002 Murder Investigation

CLOVIS - More than thirteen years after the murder of a Clovis resident, the Clovis Police Department says they have now arrested a suspect.

David Gutierrez, 33, is currently in custody at the Curry County Detention Center for his possible role in the death of Jose Valverde, according to officials. Gutierrez was arrested Tuesday.

Valverde was found dead in Clovis on April 8, 2002. Police say they found Valverde inside of a boxcar he was using as a home -- killed from what an autopsy later determined was a shotgun blast to his face.

According to Clovis police, a person who claimed to witness the death came forward in May 2011 and identified Gutierrez as the person responsible. An arrest warrant was issued in June 2015.

Officials say Gutierrez was in the custody of the New Mexico Department of Corrections on an unrelated charge.
