Buchanan Street storm sewer project set to begin

Amarillo, TX - Drivers entering downtown Amarillo may have already noticed message boards indicating that Buchanan Street will be closed at 3rd Avenue beginning July 21.

This closure is necessary to accommodate a storm sewer improvement project.

After the initial closure, one lane will reopen and remain open until the project is complete.

This project will relieve the demand on the existing Buchanan and Pierce Streets storm sewer systems, parts of which were originally installed in 1927.

The current storm sewer is undersized and the improvements will address current issues and accommodate future growth.

In April, Amarillo City Council awarded the bid to SJ&J Construction, LLC in the amount of $1,385,655.66.

Funding for this improvement comes from the approved Public Works Capital Improvement Program budget and the Drainage Fund.

Truck traffic is encouraged to use Fillmore Street instead of Buchanan Street while this project is underway.

The City would like to advise drivers to travel with extreme caution in all construction areas and to find different routes if necessary.

The project should be completed by late summer and the City of Amarillo and its contractor would like to thank area drivers in advance for their patience and support while construction is underway.
