LUBBOCK - A Lubbock family is celebrating a very unique birth. Jessica Alcala and Frank Martinez welcomed triplet girls last week. While that is special in itself, what makes this birth even more unique is that the parents did not use any reproductive assistance, and the girls are identical.
"So, one in a million chance of identical triplets," Jessica said.
"We feel blessed, really blessed," Frank said.
"It didn't feel real until the day the we actually delivered," Jessica added.
Amri, Charlotte, and Vivian did arrive early, so they're in the neonatal intensive care unit. But, doctors say they're exceeding expectations by breathing and eating on their own.
"I would say that it's been impressive to see the family. It's a lot, this mom did a lot of work," Neonatologist Andy Bowman said.
Jessica and Frank hope to go home very soon, and they've already devised a plan to tell the girls apart.
"Different nail polish, definitely. Once we pierce their ears they'll be different," Jessica said.
"We're going to get different diamond earrings, different color," Frank said.
"I don't know if we can afford the diamonds, but definitely different," Jessica added laughing.
And get this, Frank and Jessica have five other children from previous relationships, so this will bring their total to eight! So now, they're talking about the need for a new vehicle.
