Clovis woman pleads guilty to child abuse

Amarillo, TX - A woman in Clovis pleaded guilty this week to several counts of child abuse from an incident more than two years ago.

New Mexico's Ninth Judicial District Attorney's office says 25 year-old Kayla Bass pleaded guilty to charges of abuse against her own child.

Police say in April 2013, they worked the case of an 18 month-old child who showed signs of severe abuse.

"They found Kayla Bass's 18 month-old child with bruising to his head, chest, back, feet, arms, hands, face, and genitals," today's press release from the District Attorney's office said.  "It was later determined that the child had a broken clavicle, cigarette burns, and bite marks on his body."

Following a diagnostic evaluation, Bass will face her sentencing in court, which could result in up to 18 years in prison.

District Attorney Andrea Reeb said, "In my 19 years of being a prosecutor, this is one of the saddest and worst child abuse cases I have seen in my career."
