School Zone safety reminders before school starts

Amarillo, TX - Once your child's lunches are packed and backpacks are zipped up, one last thing parents need to consider is safety.

The Texas Department of Transportation wants to remind drivers and our children to be extra cautious as school zones become more active.

Last year, TxDOT says 625 cars crashes happened in school zones in Texas, resulting in two deaths and 112 serious injuries.

August and September alone saw 104 crashes in school zones. TxDOT says the most common factors causing these crashes were distracted driving, speeding, and failure to yield the right-of-way at stop signs.

TxDOT spokesman Paul Braun says the blame is not always on the driver and parents need to teach their kids about the importance of a crosswalk. "If kids are going to walk to school, they should use crosswalks especially when there's crossing guards, that's the safest," said Braun.

He also adds if children are going to ride their bikes to school they need to follow the rules of the road. "They need to drive with traffic and not dart in and out of vehicles, " said Braun.

Children need to follow the instructions of the bus drivers as they are leaving the bus, drivers need to stop while children are leaving the bus.
