Water Wasters

AMARILLO, TX (KFDA) - Even with all the rain we have seen this summer, Amarillo's water usage is not as low as some would expect it to be.

Tim Loan, the City's Assistant Utility Director told us it's actually slightly higher than last year. With more rain you would expect water consumption to be lower, but that's not the case when you look at the big picture. "Our total consumption this year is above what our average would be and that's because of some very high consumption months early on in the year," Loan said.

If you take a look at the numbers, in 2013 from the start of the year up until August 12th, 10 billion gallons of water were used. This year, from January 1st to August 12th, that number is 10.2 billion gallons. The reason, Loan says, it due to high water consumption in April and May.

But there is some good news. "Everybody's been really good at managing their sprinkler systems and automatic timers in June and July so that's really helped out with our consumption," he said.

Even so, there were a few place this week that were caught apparently wasting water. One photo sent to us shows sprinklers running in the middle of the day at Arden Road Park. When we spoke with city officials, we learned those sprinkles were running for a reason. We're told new sod had just been put down. and the system was running to help get that seed to grow.

Three other photos showed broken sprinkler heads at the Walmart on Georgia, at the Huntington Point Apartments and at the Westgate Mall. We were pleased to learn that all three businesses were aware of the issue and were taking steps to make sure it would be properly fixed.

As always, if you see a business wasting water, take a picture and let us know.

Thanks for sending us your photos to waterwasters@newschannel10.com
