Oklahoma governor supports legalization of marijuana derivative

Oklahoma City, OK - Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin says she is in favor of legalizing an oil derived from cannabis but adds she still opposes legalization of all medical marijuana.

Fallin spoke to lawmakers Wednesday on behalf of the legalization of cannabidiol, an oil derived from the marijuana plant. The oil can only be taken orally and does not affect the mind or mental processes.

Research shows the oil may be an effective tool for treating toddlers with rare conditions that cause seizures and strokes. The governor says cannabidiol could be "potentially life-saving" for some children.

Fallin says she supports a limited trial in which ill children can be treated with cannabidiol.

Advocates for a broader proposal to legalize medical marijuana have until Friday to gather signatures to qualify for the ballot.

Fallin says she does not support that proposal.
