Amarillo, TX - If you are planning on doing some shopping this weekend you may be in for some extra saving.

With school starting in just a few weeks, now's your chance to stock up on school supplies with out paying that extra 8.25% tax.

When you break it down, tax free shopping means you will save about 8 cents for every dollar you spend on most items up to $100.

At first it may not seem like a huge deal, but consider this, the National Retail Federation says the average family with just one child, in kindergarten through high school, will spend about $670 getting ready to head back to school. Factoring in the tax free discount, you'll save around $55 just in tax savings alone.

Westgate Mall General Manger Brian Giffin says this time of year is typically a busy one. "We get a lot of folks from the outlying areas, from our surrounding cities. We love for them to come here and shop. We really see a lot of those folks on Saturday and Sunday," he told us.

The economy is expected to also feel the impact this weekend. "People are coming from all over the panhandle to buy clothes and school supplies yet they will also have an impulse buy and get something they need for their house. They will eat at our restaurants, stay in our hotels, so everybody benefits. It's a really great weekend for Amarillo," William Ware with Amarillo National Bank said.

Tax free weekend in Texas has been happening since 1999. The sales will run through Sunday.
