Navajo nation, Farmington police work on arrest agreement

Posted: Updated:
Farmington, N.M. - Farmington police may soon be able to make arrests on Navajo territory.

Farmington Police Chief Steve Hebbe says police and the Navajo Nation are in the preliminary stages for an agreement similar to one the nation signed with New Mexico State Police almost two years ago.

State police Sgt. Micah Doering says this would permit officers to catch suspects on tribal land and bring them back to non-Navajo land without filing for extradition.

Hebbe says the agreement would strengthen bonds between the nation and the police department as well as lead to better law enforcement.
