Bikers traveled over 2,000 miles to help build a house

Posted: Updated:
Amarillo, TX - A group traveling from Portland, Maine is here in Amarillo to help build the 100th home from Habitat For Humanity.

The organization called "Bike And Build" started their journey June 19th and their final destination is in Santa Barbara, California.

Part of their mission is help build homes along the way. 2,396 miles later, these folks made it to Amarillo on their bikes. "Bike and build gives us the opportunity to show the world what we are made of and show the world of what we can do," says Rebecca Gripp, Team Leader for Bike and Build.

Starting Thursday morning they'll use these materials to help build the frame work for habitat for humanity's 100th house. There are a total of 33 young adults who are part of the Bike and Build organization who travel across the country to volunteer with affordable housing groups nationwide.

The bikers started Wednesday traveling from Wellington but because of some thunderstorms they had to be shuttled for 40 miles and rode their bikes for another 60 miles to be here before dark.

"We were just really excited to get here, we are kinda hungry," says Gripp.

The bikers plan to go to the Big Texan and some of them say they are up for the steak challenge. "Someone, a few people are planning to try it, and yeah, I'm definitely not, but there are a few people that are going to try it," says Gripp.

The development director of Habitat for Humanity says the bikers will be part of a milestone project. "We are able to provide families with an alternative method to home ownership that they might not otherwise have had so in getting to our 100th build, we are providing 100 new beginnings for families, 100 success stories and 100 families that get to have their own space and there is nothing better than that," says Alason Moorhead.

The house is being built is on south Houston street and will go to a single mother with three children.
