Same-sex marriage supporters petition in Texas

Austin, TX - Across Texas this morning, same-sex couples and supporters of same-sex marriage are petitioning the Texas Attorney General as the battle for rights and marriage equality continues.

Same-sex marriage supporters intended to deliver more than 5,000 petitions to Attorney General Greg Abbott, urging that Texas lawmakers drop the ban on same-sex marriage in Texas.

However, the Attorney General's office told petitioners it could not accept petitions submitted in person, so several members of the group walked to a post office to mail them instead.

In February, a federal judge declared the ban on same-sex marriage in Texas unconstitutional. A judge issued the preliminary injunction after two gay couples challenged a state constitutional amendment and a long-standing law.

Abbott and Texas Governor Rick Perry are still defending the state's law. Abbott said back in February that he would appeal the federal court ruling.
