Potter County Fire Department receives FEMA grant

Amarillo, TX - New equipment and software will improve response times for the Potter County Fire Department.FEMA granted The Potter County Fire Department $280,000 dollars from their Assistance to Firefighters Grants Program.

The program has helped firefighters and other first responders get critically needed equipment since 2001.The money will go towards new computer equipment and dispatch software.

Assistant chief Pat Fitzpatrick says this will help the department respond to calls quicker."It will help with responses and help out citizens when we respond. We will get more information from dispatch while we are in route and information that is not suitable to broadcast over the radios, we will be able to read it on the the computers," said Fitzpatrick.

All of the trucks at the fire department will be updated with computers that will help the departments accuracy when responding to calls. "And then we will have mapping in the trucks, they will be much more accurate when we are going to houses. We will know more specifically which houses we are going to, which is quite often a problem for us in the county," said Fitzpatrick.

Potter County Commissioner, Leon Church, says this new technology and equipment update is needed for the area. "Well potter county is continuing to grow, we are getting more and more folks moving out into the rural areas and it is important that we have the most up to date equipment so that we can meet the needs of those folks," said Church.

The department should have all of the new computers installed and the software up and running in a few months.
