Snack Pak 4 Kids Corn Harvest Project needs volunteers

Amarillo, TX - Snack Pak 4 Kids is gearing up for their second annual Corn Harvest Project, which is even bigger than last year.

This year, Snack Pak teamed up with two area farmers instead of just one so they can send even more children home with donated sweet corn. Wildorado farmers David Cleavinger and Bill Gruhlkey donated two acres of their land to grow bio-tech sweet corn for Snack Pak 4 Kids.

This is David Cleavinger's second year of participation, and his goal is to grow the project. "Last year, we fed about 1,800 families, and this year we've doubled the production in the acreage," said Cleavinger.

Cleavinger said rain this summer made a big difference. "We've got good production this year. The corn looks good, we've had good rains and it's been a perfect summer for corn. So we're hoping the production will be somewhere around 4,000 bags of corn."

This year's crop is nearly ready. The harvest is planned for August 16 and Snack Pak is asking the community for help. Because they have twice the amount of corn this year, they need about 250 volunteers to help harvest it. This year's crop will provide about 30,000 to 40,000 ears of sweet corn for children in need.
