Childress to build new special event center

Childress, TX - Childress is getting a brand new special event center this year.

The city is bulldozing the current Old Settler's Rodeo Arena and building the special event center in its place.

The event center will consist of two buildings and an outside rodeo arena.

The Childress EDC said the event center will bring in a variety of new attractions for Childress.

"Really any number of events," said Childress EDC Executive Director Russell Graves.

"Of course the big building will be designed for equine type of events or even just a big expo space. We're going to have a separate building that we don't have an official name for just yet but for lack of a better term, we call it the expo center. It's going to be about 8,000 square feet of concreted space that's flexible. People can use it for meetings, the school can use it for functions, people from out of town can rent it for whatever, so really the skies the limit."

The EDC aims to have construction on the special event center completed within a year.

Construction is underway on Canyon's new aquatic park, which is still on schedule to open to the public on June 1st. The aquatic park is just a bunch of holes in the ground right now. But when the slides go up (by April 10th), people will start to see how close the project is to completion.
