Falcon family delays USS Saratoga departure

Posted: Updated:
Providence, R.I. - A family of peregrine falcons has delayed the USS Saratoga's scheduled trip to Texas.

Naval Station Newport contacted the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service after the nest was discovered on board the decommissioned aircraft carrier in the spring.

The Navy has delayed the ship's final journey to Texas, where it will be scrapped, until the baby falcons are ready to take flight.

Experts say the falcons should be done raising their chicks by mid-August. They recommend postponing the ship's departure until then.

The Saratoga is now slated to leave Newport in late August. The contract to scrap it was acquired in May.

The peregrine falcon is a protected species under the federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act.
