Canyon square readies for face lift

Canyon, TX - Canyon is hoping two new projects in the downtown square will increase tourism and boost the local economy.

The projects are both expected to add jobs to Canyon and both are possible because of grants from the Canyon Economic Development Corporation.

The first project will start construction on a new building for a local a restaurant on the square. This will be the first construction on the square since 1947.

Randy Croslin with with the Canyon Economic Development says the business will receive a $100,000 grant for a construction start up, increased sales, revenue, and job creation. "This business has been quite successful as it has basically outgrown where it is. We were able to step in and help her to develop a larger place that is going to create new jobs and improve the appearance of the square. That is kind of what we are all about with economic development" said Croslin.

The second project is renovating an old building next to Johnston's Hardware on the square to bring in a retail business. "The building was an accounting office for a number of years and now it has been vacant for awhile. So we are excited to get an occupant back in there and it should create more jobs" said Croslin.

The CEDC is granting around $50,000 dollars for those renovations.

Croslin says keeping up the appearance of the Canyon square is important for the economy. "People would come to Texas and we felt like a bunch of those folks were going back to Amarillo to stay in those hotel and eat in those restaurants. We know we are not big enough to stop that totally, but we want to try and get our share of those people spending money in Canyon and eating in Canyon, and renting hotel rooms in Canyon. So we feel like all of these projects we are working on will lead to that end" said Croslin.

The restaurant should be moved into the new building in about year and renovations for the retail business should take around 6 to 12 months.
