2 regions have higher hospitalization rates

Posted: Updated:

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - New Mexico officials say communities in opposite corners of the state have the highest rates for hospitalizations in cases in which hospitalizations might be avoided.

The state Department of Health Services looked at 2012 rates of so-called ambulatory care sensitive conditions for which outpatient care or early interventions might prevent hospitalizations or complications.

According to the department, the state's northwest region consisting of Cibola, McKinley and San Juan counties had the highest rates of diabetes, angina, bacterial pneumonia, dehydration, congestive heart failure and urinary tract infections.

Meanwhile, the southeast region consisting of Chaves, Curry, DeBaca, Eddy, Lea, Lincoln, Roosevelt and Quay counties had the highest rates of asthma and hypertension.

The department says the region consisting of Bernalillo, Sandoval, Valencia and Torrance counties had the lowest chronic and acute rates.
