Chapters Capistrano Addresses Americas Unique Addiction Crises, Says Recovery Should Become National Priority

Posted: Updated:
In response to a new report highlighting the unique addiction patterns of Americans in comparison to global trends, Chapters Capistrano emphasizes need for recovery.

For the staff at residential drug and alcohol rehabilitation clinic Chapters Capistrano, addiction is often a very unique experience for any individual afflicted by it. Part of the reason this addiction recovery center offers flexible treatment options is due to the fact that people respond differently to different addiction modalities. However, while this facility notes that substance abuse experiences are unique to every guest, the patterns of addiction within the country are also distinctive when compared to those of the rest of the world.

A recent article from The Pacific Standard highlights nine areas of addiction in the United States that contrast the substance abuse patterns of citizens in other countries. For example, the article reveals, “Americans are more likely to try illegal drugs than anyone else in the world, according to global survey data from the World Health Organization.”

Mike Shea, founder of Chapters Capistrano, adds in response, “The fact that Americans are more likely to abuse illicit drugs—even experimentally—suggests that there needs to be greater awareness efforts on the dangers of addiction. While there are many comprehensive recovery options that have delivered success, the United States should also make it a priority to prevent drug abuse on any level.”

Another interesting statistic detailed in the article is America’s propensity to use more opioid medications for medical purposes—a pattern that Shea believes is strongly linked to the ongoing painkiller addiction epidemic in the United States. The article explains, “Only seven percent of the global population is believed to have adequate access to appropriate pain relief, according to the World Health Organization. Compare that to the U.S., which has only five percent of the world’s population but consumes 80 percent of its opioids.”

Shea responds, “Painkiller use is a complex issue in the medical world. The World Health Organization presents data that could suggest that many other countries are under-prescribing

proper pain relief, but also shows that American doctors are likely overprescribing—and contributing to dependency issues. As a result, I believe there needs to be greater education for both patients and health care providers as to when painkiller use is appropriate and how to monitor intake to curb addiction and overdose rates that are increasing in the United States.”

The article also pinpoints two unique factors about addiction recovery treatment in the United States: that the country’s addiction recovery model is mostly founded in the 12-Step Program and encouraged through coercion. These are two facets that the staff at Chapters Capistrano is working to change in order to improve recovery in Americans struggling with addiction.

“The 12-Step Model works for some—but also comes with significantly low rates of success. In addition, addiction is often treated as a short-term problem, when in fact, it is something that requires extensive education, prevention and treatment for greater recovery rates,” Shea adds.

In face of these trends, Shea believes that as addiction awareness grows in the United States, more Americans are becoming accepting to alternative recovery treatment options, as well as becoming more open about facing these struggles. Chapters Capistrano is proud to take part in this progress by offering a myriad of flexible treatment programs at its Southern California residency, in addition to flexible stay lengths for more thorough recovery in guests.
