"Fracking" Petition hits Texas city

"Fracking" Petition hits Texas city

Denton, TX - Denton could become the first city in the state of Texas to ban hydraulic fracturing, but only if city leaders approve a grassroots petition to outlaw the drilling method.

A public hearing will take place tonight to address this matter.

A Colorado-based group has already been circulating a competing petition in support of hydraulic fracturing, or "fracking."

The head of the agency that regulates the oil and gas industry in Texas wrote Denton city officials Thursday asking them to withhold their support for the petition.

Outgoing railroad commission chairman Barry Smitherman is calling it a "ban on drilling'' and fears it could injure the state's economy.

Even if the council rejects the ban, Denton residents could vote on it in November.
