COWBOYS-LEARY-DWI

Cowboys guard pleads guilty to drunken driving

DALLAS (AP) - A Cowboys offensive lineman has pleaded guilty to a first-time drunken driving charge.

Ronald Leary was arrested in suburban Dallas in September 2012 after failing a field sobriety test. According to the arrest warrant affidavit, he was pulled over for multiple traffic violations and on suspicion of driving while intoxicated.

Online court records show the Cowboys' starting left guard pleaded guilty Thursday. He will receive 18 months of probation and a $1,000 fine.

A message seeking comment was left with his attorney Monday.

Leary was a Memphis University guard before the Cowboys signed him as a free agent in 2012. He has had a chronic knee problem.

SMU-MUDIAY GOING PRO

Top SMU recruit Mudiay to purse pro opportunities

DALLAS (AP) - Prized SMU recruit Emmanuel Mudiay will pursue professional basketball opportunities overseas instead of playing for the Mustangs.

Coach Larry Brown said Monday that the decision by the 6-foot-5 McDonald's All-American point guard was based on a "hardship issue" and not any academic issues for the incoming freshman.

The coach says Mudiay had already been admitted into SMU.

In a statement, Brown said Mudiay "really wants to alleviate some of the challenges his family faces and recognizes he has an opportunity to help them now."

Mudiay averaged 16 points, six rebounds and four assists a game as a senior last season at Dallas Prime Prep Academy. He was considered by most as the nation's top high-school point guard in the class of 2014.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL PLAYOFF TROPHY

College Football Playoff's trophy is golden

IRVING, Texas (AP) - A rising gold football-shaped trophy will be the prize for the national champion in the new College Football Playoff.

College Football Playoff executive director Bill Hancock unveiled the more than 2-foot-high trophy Monday. Made from 24-karat gold, bronze and stainless steel, the bottom of the trophy is shaped like a football and rises to form an actual-sized ball at the top.

Hancock says the more than 2-foot trophy, which weighs about 35 pounds, is designed to be hoisted from its foot-high base. Hancock took a selfie with the trophy, but says the first hoisting will be reserved for the winner of the first national championship game Jan. 12 in Arlington, Texas.

When addressing the cost of the trophy, Hancock called it a "priceless one-of-a-kind piece of art."

BULLS TRADES

Bulls make 2 trades to clear salary-cap space

CHICAGO (AP) - The Chicago Bulls have made two trades to clear salary-cap space, setting the stage for the addition of free-agent center Pau Gasol.

The Bulls sent forward Anthony Randolph, two second-round draft picks and cash considerations to Orlando for the rights to Milovan Rakovic. Randolph was acquired in a draft-night trade with Denver that gave the Bulls the rights to high-scoring Creighton forward Doug McDermott.

Chicago also traded forward Greg Smith to Dallas on Monday for the rights to Tadija Dragicevic. The Bulls signed Smith in April after he was waived by Houston, but he never appeared in a game with Chicago.

The pair of moves helps make room for Gasol, who announced over the weekend that he planned to join the Bulls.

QUARTERBACK SHOT

Houston Baptist quarterback carjacked, shot

HOUSTON (AP) - A Houston Baptist University quarterback is recovering in his dorm room after he was shot and carjacked by four men over the weekend.

KPRC-TV reports that 21-year-old Jonathan Fleming was shot twice - once in the shoulder and once in the heel - after attending a party Sunday on Houston's southeast side.

Fleming says he was leaving the party when four men approached him with a gun, demanding he exit his vehicle and give up his possessions. Fleming says he threw his keys and wallet into the street, before one of the men shot him. The robbers ran away.

A message seeking comment from the Houston Police Department wasn't immediately returned Monday.
