New Mexico couple faces child abuse charges

Albuquerque, NM - A New Mexico couple is now facing criminal charges for leaving their 5 year old child in a hot car for more than an hour.

The 5 year old girl told police her parents were punishing her by leaving her in a hot car for more than an hour, but the girl's sister says it was just an accident.

Police say the parents left their 5 year old daughter in a sweltering truck for about an hour in southeast Albuquerque at a Home Depot parking lot. It was 90 degrees out and officers say the little girl crawled out of a rear sliding window, covered in sweat, crying, and screaming.

The couples 19 year old daughter says her parents did not know what was happening when they came out of the store because the couple claims they did not know the little girl was in the truck. She also claims that her parents have always taken good care of their six children, ranging in ages from three months to 19.

Wednesday, a judge came down hard on the parents and increased the sentence as they both face felony charges of child abuse with great bodily harm.     Police say the girl told them her parents told her to stay in the truck as punishment for not eating, earlier that day.
