150 jobs brings an economic boost to Hereford

Amarillo, TX - The City of Hereford is bringing in new retail jobs.

Amigos, United Express is bringing 150 jobs to the area and attracting people from surrounding towns to shop there.

"It's always a good time to have economic development, everyday is concentrated effort to trying to bring people to Hereford, Texas," says Executive Director Sid Shaw, Chamber of Commerce.

Hereford is building the first original Amigos store.

The other three are located in Lubbock, Plainview and Amarillo and were initially United Supermarkets.

Along with the Amigos store, a United Express convenience store with four gas pumps will be in the same location.

Job fairs have already begun at the First Baptist Church in Hereford and will go on until Saturday.

"We are super excited to be in Hereford, Texas, we have seen lots of excitement here in town. I mean just the job fair turned out you know to be better than what we expected. We've had over 500 people show up so far." says Julio Elizalde, General Manager.

Amigos is hiring anyone from clerks to meat cutters. 3 million dollars is expected to go towards payroll.

And the Executive Director from the Chamber of Commerce says the city is looking forward for the change and feel Amigos is a good fit.

"We are excited as we can be about having United here. United has always been a community player wherever they are and we are certain that they will be that in Hereford as well, they'll participate in our civic organizations, they'll participate in our fund raisers, they'll do everything that our community needs and we are very excited for them to come," says Shaw.

The grand opening is scheduled for August 20th.
