Endangered chicken postpones spaceflight plans

Midland, Texas - An endangered species of prairie chicken has clipped the wings of West Texas spaceflight plans.

Midland International Airport has been working to become the first in the nation to provide a runway for both commercial planes and spaceflight. The city has postponed its plans as it waits for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to clear their Federal Aviation Administration spaceport licence.

The service is concerned sonic booms would disrupt the prairie chicken's early-morning mating habits. City officials argue the sounds will not affect the birds.

The FAA has until mid-September to issue the licence, a process that has taken almost two years.

The lesser prairie-chicken was federally listed as endangered in March.
