Astros hit 3 leadoff homers in 8-3 win at Texas
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Chris Carter led off two innings with home runs, George Springer had one inning-starting long ball and the Houston Astros beat the Texas Rangers 8-3 on Tuesday night.
Jose Altuve had two hits, two stolen bases and a sacrifice fly. The All-Star second baseman matched Houston's franchise record with 28 consecutive stolen bases without being caught while pushing his AL-leading total to 41. He leads the American League with 126 hits and a .341 batting average.
Houston went ahead to stay with two runs in the first inning off Phil Irwin who was making his Rangers debut.
Brad Peacock struck out five while allowing two runs and six hits over 5 2-3 innings.
Except for 21 days, and none past mid-April in either of their two seasons since switching leagues, the Astros have been at the bottom of the five-team AL West. After taking the first two of this three-game set, they are within a game of fourth-place Texas, which has lost nine of its last 10 games - and 17 of 20.
Darvish struck in head during Rangers BP
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - All-Star pitcher Yu Darvish was struck in the head by a ball during a throwing session in the outfield while the Texas Rangers took batting practice Tuesday.
Darvish resumed throwing after a few minutes.
The Rangers said Darvish, who is scheduled to start the series finale against Houston on Wednesday night, would be checked by team physician Dr. Keith Meister.
Darvish had just made a throw when he was struck apparently by a batted ball. Clearly stunned, the Japanese ace dropped into a squat momentarily before getting up, wiping his brow and appearing to check his head with his fingers. He then put his cap back on and finished his throwing session with other pitchers.
Rangers put Martinez on DL, call up Irwin to start
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - The Texas Rangers have placed right-hander Nick Martinez on the 15-day disabled list, and recalled right-hander Phil Irwin from Triple-A Round Rock.
Irwin was set to start Tuesday night's game against Houston in his Rangers debut. His only other major league appearance was a start for Pittsburgh on April 13, 2013.
Martinez has discomfort in his left side, and the move was retroactive to July 2.
Martinez is 1-6 with a 5.10 ERA over 16 games for the Rangers.
Irwin was 4-1 with a 2.41 ERA in seven games for Round Rock. Texas got him on a waiver claim from Pittsburgh on May 28.
Astros put OF Presley on DL, recall Grossman
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Houston Astros outfielder Alex Presley has been put on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right oblique.
The Astros made the move before Tuesday night's game. Presley got hurt while swinging during an at-bat in the eighth inning of the series opener at Texas on Monday night.
Outfielder Robbie Grossman was recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City. Grossman was in the starting lineup against the Rangers, batting second and playing right field. This is his third stint in the majors this season.
Presley had a homer in Monday night's win before having to leave in the middle of an at-bat.

Dive injured ex-Texas Tech player before drowning
LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) - An official says a former Texas Tech baseball player drowned at a lake over the holiday weekend after suffering head and neck trauma when he dove into shallow water at a lake.
Wayne Mack, a Montgomery County justice of the peace, said Tuesday that the cause of death for 21-year-old Elliot Richoux (ree-SHOO') was drowning, which was a result of the head and neck injuries suffered in the dive from a dock.
Richoux died Friday at Lake Conroe (KAHN'-roh) in Southeast Texas.
Richoux was a second-team All-American catcher at Howard College in Big Spring before playing the 2013 season with the Red Raiders. Richoux, who did not play this season for Tech, earned all-state honors playing for The Woodlands High School.
