Inmate at The Roosevelt County Detention Center Injures a County Employee

Portales, NM - An attempted escape of a Roosevelt County Detention Center inmate leaves a Roosevelt County employee injured.

County officials identify the inmate as 32-year-old, Senovio Mendoza.

The County Manager's Office reports Mendoza was working at the Roosevelt County Fairgrounds on July 2nd, when Mendoza struck the county employee watching him in the head with an axe.

Mendoza then tied the employee's hands and feet with duct tape, stole his keys and wallet and then took off in the employees car. The car was spotted later by the Roosevelt County Manager who then called units for help.

Several officers joined the pursuit near Muleshoe. Mendoza was stopped near Sudan. He was arrested and taken back into custody.

The Roosevelt County Detention Center was holding Mendoza for Eddy County. The county employee received medical treatment at Roosevelt General Hospital and was released.

The investigation of this incident is still ongoing.

    Construction is underway on Canyon's new aquatic park, which is still on schedule to open to the public on June 1st. The aquatic park is just a bunch of holes in the ground right now. But when the slides go up (by April 10th), people will start to see how close the project is to completion.
