Group gathers signatures for Okla. school storm shelters

Posted: Updated:
Oklahoma City, OK - A group hoping to build storm shelters in every Oklahoma public school has started gathering signatures to place an initiative petition on a statewide ballot.

Spokesman for Take Shelter Oklahoma Tim Farley says organizers began collecting signatures Wednesday.

They must get 155,000 Oklahoma voters to sign in 90 days to have the measure included in the November ballot.

The petition drive calls for a $500 million bond for the shelters to be reimbursed from the state's General Revenue Fund.

This is the second petition launched by advocates, the first abandoned in April.

The drive comes over a year after the tornado in Moore on May 20, 2013. The storm destroyed two schools and killed seven children at Plaza Towers Elementary School.
