11 indicted in South Texas law enforcement cheating scam

Brownsville, TX - Eleven former and candidate South Texas sheriff's deputies have been indicted for cheating on a civil service exam.

Officials have said a deputy allegedly photographed the test with a cell phone last September and then shared the image with others.

Cameron County District Attorney Luis Saenz announced Tuesday the suspects face charges of misuse of official information. The offense is punishable by two to ten years in prison.

Authorities say the deputies were hired as part of a grant, but when the program ended, they were required to take the exam to keep their jobs.

Five now-former deputies, fired during the investigation, and six candidate deputies have been charged. All were arrested and released Tuesday on $10,000 surety bonds.

The indictment was returned June 25.
