AMARILLO - An Amarillo man is under arrest for stealing copper from an Xcel Energy substation.

Trygve Orbeck, 43, is in custody of Potter County Jail on a felony charge Theft of Materials, Evading Arrest, and one local Municipal warrant.

On Sunday, the Amarillo Police Department were dispatched to 7th and Bonham for a theft in progress. While en route, police were notified that Xcel Energy employees also were notified of a theft in a substation near the same area. Upon arrival, they found the suspect was being detained by an Xcel Energy employee and Randall County Deputy on commissioned reserve.

Police say Orbeck entered the substation around Sunday morning. He began removing copper wire from a spool and threaded the copper wire through a fence. The suspect started to pull the wire from the substation area, but stopped from apparent fear of being seen by the Xcel employee. The suspect was then detained by the deputy reserve.
