Canyon Farmer's Market readies for grand opening

Canyon, TX - Canyon is hoping to attract a crowd this weekend with the launch of their first farmer's market. It's been a year in the making to bring fresh produce and crafts to Canyon's courthouse square in an open market setting.

The organizers hope all the hard work will pay off starting Saturday morning when 23 vendors from Randall County fill the square to sell homegrown and homemade products.

The Canyon Farmer's Market board president said shoppers can expect a variety of items beyond just produce. "We're going to have potters, we're going to have people who make baked goods and have crafts that they've sewn and made from home," said President Debbie Grant.

The Canyon Chamber of Commerce said the farmer's market will not only benefit the vendors, but surrounding businesses as well. "I think it's going to be a huge impact," said Roger Remlinger with the chamber. "The town seems to be pretty thrilled about it. It's not only going to help the farmer's but it's also going to help the people who have businesses surrounding the square because they'll be done here and they'll want to check out what's going on in other stores and stuff like that."

Their goal is to bring as many people to Canyon as possible and the organizers said they expect a good crowd in the morning. "From the publicity and the phone calls I've received, it sounds like we're going to have quite a large amount of people that is going to come and enjoy the market," said Grant.

The farmer's market board will continue to recruit new vendors for the market so it can grow in size each week. The Canyon Farmer's Market will be open every Saturday 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. until October.
