Two animal welfare ordinances go into effect this week

Posted: Updated:
Amarillo, TX - Two ordinances to protect animal welfare in Amarillo are going into effect this week.

The first ordinance makes ear cropping and tail docking against city code by anyone other than a veterinarian.

The use of chains as collars or tethers to stake an animal is also outlawed by the ordinance. If a dog is tethered outside, the tether has to keep the dog at least three feet away from a public sidewalk. You can still use a chain collar or leash to walk a dog, you just can't tether them with it.

There are also clearer specifications for quality and quantity of food, water and shelter provided to a pet.

The second ordinance gives animal control and police officers the authority to write citations for violations of the updated city code. There will be a grace period for all the changes except for cases of improper ear cropping and tail docking. Citations for those offenses begin immediately.
