Property damage caused by lightning

Amarillo, TX - This time of year is one of the most active times for lightening to strike. Last year lightning caused around 23 million dollars in property damage across the country.

A local insurance agent, Michael Fox, says our area has seen it's fair share of damage. If lightening does strike your home it has the potential to affect more than you think.

"Typically what happens when lightening strikes is, it is not a direct hit from the lightening. It is a power surge through telephone lines and any electrical lines that run through your home. You're doorbell can go out and your microwave ... things in different parts of the home. It can destroy electronics plugged in and ultimately cause a fire in the home if it is not properly grounded."

Fox says a general surge protector is a good way to protect your home in case lightening hits.
