Texas Medical Association hopes to help veterans

Posted: Updated:
Austin, Texas - The Texas Medical Association hopes to help veterans by lightening the load of the Veterans Affairs healthcare system.

The group, with membership of more than 47,000 physicians and medical students, urges President Barack Obama to help shorten wait times by allowing private physicians to treat veteran patients.

The association is starting a registry of private Texas practitioners who would be willing to provide medical care for veteran patients. They will share this registry with medical directors of Texas VA facilities and with community groups who work with veterans.

"America's veterans need healthcare, so TMA wants to create a system to connect them with Texas physicians who want to help," Dr. Austin King, the association's president, said.
