Canyon, TX - The Canyon City Commission voted to pass an ordinance banning the use of electronic cigarettes among kids.
The commission voted four to one to pass the proposed ordinance presented by Canyon Chief of Police Dale Davis, who says they are seeing more minors with e-cigarettes devices.
"There are a lot more of these minors seen with these devices so we have got to put something in place."
Right now there are no state or federal regulations for electronic cigarettes, so minors can legally buy them.
"It is a problem that our school law enforcement has noticed, they are taking several away several times a week"
The owner of an electronic cigarette shop in Canyon, Devin Cowart, says the ordinance won't affect their business at all.
"As far as I know the ordinance is to keep kids under 18 kids from using the product which we are all for. That has been our policy since day one and that has been many vap shop polices that I know of".
However one Canyon citizen thinks this is the city being too intrusive.
"If we are going to start regulating e-cigs, why don't we regulate energy drinks because you are getting about the same effects. Sometimes those energy drinks and the substances that people are eating and drinking everyday are far worse than what is inside an electronic cigarettes"
This ordinance will work similar to a tobacco ordinance.
If a minor is in possession, they will be issued a Class C misdemeanor with a fine of up to $500 dollars.
