Portales city manager proposes freezes on pay raises, hiring

Posted: Updated:
Portales, N.M. -To save money in a tight city budget, City Manager Doug Redmond proposes to begin a hiring freeze and cut scheduled pay raises for non-hourly employees.

While employees will still receive raises for the budget year ending June 30, Redmond told the Portales News-Tribune that step increases for management and salaried employees slated for after July 1 would be frozen. However, in January, hourly employees should receive a two-percent cost of living increase.

The proposals will require City Council approval. Councilman Leo Lovett believes the proposal is a better alternative to increasing health insurance rates.

City officials are planning to talk with employee groups about the potential freezes.
