HOUSTON, June 13, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital and a panel of experts from Houston Methodist Orthopedics & Sports Medicine host a free Father & Son Symposium on June 26 from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. on the Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital campus.
Join the medical specialists for this free event spotlighting issues facing boys ages 10 and up, including supplement use, safe weightlifting/training, concussions and common sports injuries and more.
A panel of orthopedic, sports medicine and primary care sports medicine specialists, who administer thousands of school sports physicals each year, lecture to coaches and athletic clubs across Houston and serve as team doctors to high school and collegiate sports teams, will discuss some of the most common issues facing young boys today - from musculoskeletal development and training for youth sports to peer pressure.
"This is a great opportunity for fathers - particularly those volunteering as coaches and providing sideline support - to ask questions and discuss with others some of the things most frequently seen in training and on the field. We'll also talk about the latest in concussion management and new return to sports guidelines," said
John Seaberg, MD, board certified orthopedic sports medicine specialist and head team physician for Prairie View A&M University.
"With growing emphasis on concussion testing and changes in pitch count regulations in Little League baseball following a dramatic rise in elbow injuries, we believe we have an obligation to help educate parents and coaches in our community - providing the resources they need to ensure not only safe play but also a healthy adolescence overall for their kids," added Dr. Seaberg, who obtained his subspecialty training in orthopedic sports medicine at the renowned American Sports Medicine Institute in Birmingham, Alabama.
Dr. Seaberg is also fellowship trained in arthroscopic and reconstructive shoulder and knee surgery and has expertise in operative and nonoperative fracture care and sports injuries. The colleagues he will join in this discussion include; Primary Care Sports Medicine Specialists Scott Rand, MD FAAFP, Christian Schupp, MD FACSM, and Gregory Seelhoefer, MD CAQSM - as well as Pediatric Specialist Tad Shirley, MD.
"Our physicians are very involved in the community, volunteering countless hours to provide support and education to high schools and organized sports clubs. They see first-hand some of the challenges our young boys are facing. Together we're able to provide valuable resources for preventive care, which is an important part of our ongoing effort to be a partner in health in Northwest Houston," said Beryl Ramsey, chief executive officer of Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital and senior vice president of Houston Methodist.
