UIL pushes for change in basketball tournament site

Posted: Updated:
Austin, TX - The face of high school sports in Texas is about to see some changes for the upcoming season. For the first time in 93 years, the site for the Texas high school state basketball tournaments could be moving out of Austin.

Athletic officials with the UIL are pushing to move the tournaments out of Austin for concerns over the growth of the South by Southwest festival, which is making it difficult to hold the tournament events on consecutive weekends in early March.

The UIL legislative council cleared the way Wednesday for officials to work on a deal to move the boys' and girls' basketball championships to the Alamodome in San Antonio next year.

The UIL is also adding competitive cheerleading for the 2015-2016 season.
