Dozens of animals saved for "Just One Day"

Amarillo, TX - No animals were euthanized at Amarillo Animal Control on Wednesday as part of the nationwide "Just One Day" Campaign.

Shelters across the country took a pledge to prevent the euthanasia of healthy animals. Amarillo Animal Control and the Amarillo-Panhandle Humane Society took the campaign one step further by promoting adoption and the micro-chipping of pets in our area. They did this by making all adoption fees and micro-chipping half price for the entire day.

"We've participated in the past and it's a pledge normally. So we just thought we'd ramp it up a little bit and be proactive and do some things that will help make for a better community," explained Interim Animal Control Director Scott McDonald.

McDonald said the chips are critical to keeping as many animals as possible out of the shelter. "If an officer gets a call for a stray animal they go and locate the animal and the first thing they do is scan the animal. So if we have the information and the owner's address, a phone number, we'll call them immediately. We'll take the pet back to their house. It doesn't cost them anything. They don't have to pay impound fees. And that's exactly what we're here to do is to reunite pets with their owners."

The microchip procedure is so simple even Mayor Paul Harpole was able to do it. McDonald said not enough people realize just how easy and painless it is for animals to get the procedure done. Overall, he said Wednesday's event was a huge success.

About 40 pets were adopted and more than 200 were micro-chipped.
