Man indicted in Lighthouse murder case

Posted: Updated:
Amarillo, TX - A man has been indicted in connection to the murder at the Amarillo Lighthouse Apartments back in February.

Joseph Keith Hayes awaits his time in court for murder and aggravated assault charges.

Local District Attorney James Farren says Hayes is believed to have used a machete-type blade, killing Nathaniel Miller and wounding a woman also in the apartment.

Hayes was taken into custody the day of the murder when police found him at a house in north Amarillo.

Felony cases typically take 6 months to a year to reach trial. Farren says this case could end up taking longer.

"The serious nature of this particular case could delay the trial some. There is usually a little more activity on the part of the defense. There's more emotions more pretrial hearings and that often delays things," said Farren.

Farren says he expects this case to take anywhere between 9 months to a year and a half to be resolved, most likely, through a trial.
The woman who was injured is still recovering from the assault.
