Chipotle heads to Amarillo

Amarillo, TX - The Mexican restaurant chain Chipotle will set up shop in Amarillo this year.

NewsChannel 10 took a look into why some restaurant chains bring their business to our city while others do not. Amarillo is home to many local restaurants, but cities like Lubbock often attract the national chains first.

"The reason that they're probably looking at Amarillo a little later on is because we don't have the same demographics that are going to get them the biggest opportunity or biggest  investment," explained David Terry, the executive director of the WT Enterprise Center.

He said one of the most appealing demographics is a major university, which we don't have. Terry also said support for local businesses could play a role. "Amarillo has a very strong local base and we support our own, like in the case of Krispy Kreme that moved in a couple years ago and the case of Starbucks and some of those that have competed against very sacred local brands. That's also something these restaurants take into consideration is the competition."

But Amarillo does have other attractive qualities, which is why businesses like Chipotle eventually take interest.

"Besides the citizens of Amarillo, you have to look at Interstate-40 and I-27," said Amarillo Chamber of Commerce President Gary Molberg. "We have a lot of traffic that goes up and down the interstates every day. Well they stop here in our hotels, they eat in our restaurants, and they shop in our stores."

Amarillo also draws people from the 26 counties of the Panhandle. "I think some do not realize Amarillo is a lot more than a city of 200,000 people," said Molberg. "It's a city that draws from the surrounding area and a lot of people don't realize that until they get here."

Chipotle spokesperson Chris Arnold said the restaurant expects to open by the end of this year or in early 2015. It will be located at 2414 S. Georgia Street.
