Employees of the Roosevelt County Courthouse have been evacuated

Amarillo, TX - Mold has been discovered in the Roosevelt County Courthouse in Portales.

Eight types of mold have been discovered at this courthouse-- none at this time have been identified as toxic black mold.

For safety precautions employees have been moved  temporarily.

A strain of black mold was found in the Roosevelt County Courthouse along with seven other types of mold.

"This is not the toxic black mold that you would automatically refer black mold to be, it just happens to be because it's greenish to black in color, it is not toxic black mold that were elevated were actually found in plant life." says Charlene Webb, Roosevelt County Manager.

The 76-year-old building was shutdown Friday-- as all 34 employees relocated their work station-- to the Jake Lopez Community Center.

"We left all the office furniture and i mean we didn't have to move out, like move furniture or books or any of that stuff, they can clean all of that as well." says Webb

Roosevelt County employees are expected to work at the community center for the rest of the week.

"We began operations this morning, so that they can have the entire building to perform all the cleaning and sanitizing that they need to do without us interrupting and having to seal off floors at a time." says Charlene Webb, Roosevelt County Manager.

And as far as the cleanup cost-- it will be over $150,000 and that is expected to include replacing ceiling tiles, steam cleaning carpets and sanitizing all furniture.

The money will come from reserve federal funds.

It is not yet known as to where the mold came from but recent high winds is suspected of being one of the sources.

An environmental consultant will test the facility to make sure it is safe before reopening it on Monday.
