Convention aims to bring business to Canyon

Posted: Updated:
Amarillo, TX - The City of Canyon is excited for some extra visitors this month when it hosts the annual Panhandle Firemen's and Fire Marshals' Association (PFFMA) convention.

The convention will bring almost 300 visitors to Canyon during the three-day event. The Canyon EDC said this is a big deal for Canyon and the PFFMA agrees.

"We should fill the restaurants, we should fill the shops and things. And I know the chamber has really worked with us and the CEDC has worked with us, so I hope we can fill them up and provide some economic benefit to the community," said PFFMA secretary and treasurer Dennis Rice.

This is the first year since the 1950s a city other than Amarillo will host the convention. "The bylaw in the past said the convention had to be in Amarillo. And all we did last year was amend the bylaw to say it could be anywhere in the central Panhandle," explained Rice.

The PFFMA is making the convention more family-oriented this year by adding an extra day of competition training activities to incorporate kids of all ages. "Adding a day of training will add another day that people are hopefully staying in the community, spending a night, staying in the hotels, spending money in the restaurants or different shops in the community," said Rice.

The convention is May 16 - 18 and some of the events will be open to the public.
