The Compassion Experience brings stories of children in underdeveloped countries to Amarillo

Posted: Updated:
Amarillo, TX -  A unique experience is transporting people from Amarillo to underdeveloped countries this weekend at the Hillside Christian Church on Soncy in Amarillo.

The Compassion Experience has been traveling around the country for the past two years bringing their immersion event to local church communities.

It may just seem like a trailer in a parking lot from the outside, but after a few moments inside, you forget you are in Amarillo, or even America for that matter.

"The Compassion Mobile Experience is an opportunity for people to be able to be immersed into the story of a child whose life was changed through child sponsorship," said Johnathan Mast who is the Pastor at the West Campus of Hillside Christian Church.

Every visitor gets their own personal experience because they are given an iPod Touch with a child's personal story, which is narrated by the child themselves as they walk through and immerse themselves in their world.

Our story was about a girl named Julian and the difficult way of life she endured before she was sponsored by a couple through the Compassion Program.

And as you move from room to room you see how her life was impacted by the program.

"To be involved in just someone else's story is impactful, for my life, but knowing that we again can just do a little bit and impact greatly is exciting," Ayvrie Dixon who is a member at Hillside Christian Church said.

"I think this is a great opportunity for our church as well as anyone in the community who comes, just to be able to see things from a global perspective," said Mast.

The experience can even be shared with young children to allow them to see how they can make a difference in someone else's life.

"I love that they can see that something they can do themselves is right here at their fingertips and knowing that their amazing world can influence another kiddos world is exciting for me to see, but their hearts are so excited to be apart of this too," Dixon said.

In addition to trying to sponsor one thousand children through the project this weekend, the church is also giving back to many local organizations as well.
