Snack Pak 4 Kids needs help fighting summer hunger

Amarillo, TX - Snack Pak 4 Kids works with area schools to end weekend hunger, but that hunger doesn't end when schools get out for summer.

During summer vacation, the organization will serve 500 more children than last year and they need help finding sponsors. About 1,600 children throughout the Panhandle will rely on Snack Pak for their weekend meals. As of right right now, 900 children still need sponsors.

"We're well on our way to having that group of kids sponsored, but I think it's important that we make the community aware about what we're trying to do, and continue to do, and also the fact that hunger does not take the summer off and that's why they need us to take care of this problem," said Snack Pak representative Dyron Howell.

It only costs $35 to sponsor a child for the entire summer. "One hundred percent of those dollars we use to buy nothing but food," said Howell. That $35 pays for a bag each weekend with items like beef sticks, cereal and crackers.

"Unfortunately the kids that we serve dread the summer, not because they're not going to have a vacation or something fun, it's because they're going to be thrown into a food insecure situation. We want to take that worry and stress off of them so this solution that they've already had for those 40 weeks during the school year will continue in the summer," said Howell.
