ENMU rodeo member killed during practice

Portales, NM - An Eastern New Mexico University student is dead after a tragic rodeo accident Tuesday evening.

ENMU bull rider Irvying Urquijo, 20, was stepped on by a bull during practice, and later passed away from his injuries at a Portales hospital.

His rodeo coach said the team lost a very talented teammate and a good friend. "He was just a special young man and all of us loved him, and he loved what he was doing," said Coach Albert Flinn. "Everyone will have to take it in strides and sympathy goes out to his family right now."

The university is making counseling available to students and is working with Urquijo's family to hold a memorial service sometime in the near future. Athletic Director Jeff Geiser said this is the second death due to bull riding in the university's history, but would not go into detail about liability issues involving this type of accident.

School officials said they are investigating the details of the accident.
