New home for WT's Amarillo campus

Amarillo, TX - West Texas A&M University will have a new and permanent home in downtown Amarillo soon.

Tuesday afternoon, the Amarillo City Council approved the EDC to purchase the Commerce Building in downtown Amarillo for $3.1 million. This will allow WT to move classes out of the Chase Tower and into the Commerce Building.

EDC CEO and President Buzz David said the move will not only benefit WT, but the city as well. "We demonstrated over the last five years how important it is to have WT's upper level and graduate level programs here in the community. This move establishes a permanent location in Amarillo. It keeps us from being one of those large cities without a four-year university presence in its city limits, so we kind of joined the big leagues today."

David said the building needs $6 to $9 million in renovations before WT can move in. The Harrington Foundation has already provided a $3 million donation to help with those renovations.

David said businesses already using the Commerce Building will not be affected.
