Officer involved shooting at Northwest Texas Hospital

Amarillo, TX - Updated information on the officer involved shooting at Northwest Texas Hospital Tuesday night.

According to APD, at 10:30 p.m. officers were originally responding to a call on a possible assault.

While police were there, they recognized a man leaving the hospital who was subject to another investigation. Police say the officers went to the parking lot to talk to the man and saw that he was in a vehicle being driven by a female.

According to police, the officer approached the vehicle ordering the driver to stop. They say the driver then revved the engine and drove the vehicle directly at the officer. This prompted the officer to open fire on the vehicle, hurting one of the occupants in the car. We're told there are no life threatening injuries.

APD identifies the driver as 25 year-old Leighann Griffin. She was booked into the Potter County Correction Center for Aggravated Assault against a Peace Officer, a warrant for theft by check out of Randall County; and a traffic warrant issued by the City of Amarillo.

Amarillo police will soon be able to process drug cases faster thanks to an upcoming addition to their staff. With a forensic scientist working directly for the department, narcotics cases can be closed in half the time they take now. Any drugs the APD seizes go to the DPS crime lab for analysis, where they have to wait to be processed behind any existing cases.
