Amarillo, TX - Taking 2 cases of beer from a convenience store may land 3 people in prison with a sentence of up to 99 years.
Amarillo Police say three men entered the Stop-and-Save convenience store on the 900 block of Amarillo Blvd East, around 10 Monday night.
Officers say one of the male subjects entered the store wearing a ski mask armed with a gun, two other suspects then threatened employees, and stole 2 cases of beer.
Corporal Jerry Neufeld says Texas state law makes this a serious crime because a deadly weapon is involved.
"When you use a firearm to commit that robbery it is now a first degree felony, first degree felony is going to get you 5 to 99 years in prison and up to a 10,000 dollar fine. A second degree felony, which would be just a plain robbery is going to be 2 to 20 years and up to a 10,000 dollar fine. It is kind of astonishing maybe that someone would commit a first degree felony for a case of beer"
Police say all three males left the store in a dark colored pickup truck after the robbery.
