Amarillo, TX -

Often times the garage door get's overlooked when thinking about protecting your property. But, experts say thieves are now targeting this new entry point into your home.

A trend where people are breaking into your home through your garage door is on the rise.

We spoke with a local garage door company owner, who says he is seeing more calls to make these kinds of repairs, after the incident has occurred. But there are a few things you can do to protect yourself and to prevent this from happening to you. "If they get into your garage they can get right on in to your house. It's very easy from them on," said Tony Hall, owner of Willow Creek Overhead Doors in Amarillo.

Thieves can break into your garage in just a few seconds by untangling an wire hanger and slipping through the door. "It is a very easy way to access your house and a lot of people don't put a lot of money or thought into the security into their garage, but I think we better," Hall told us.

If you're looking for a temporary solution, some door repair companies say zip ties may help you fend off crooks. Just thread it through the emergency release latch so it can't be released by one of those coat hangers. But, make sure if you do use a zip tie, you are able to cut it loose in case of an emergency.

Hall also suggests making sure your door is securely sealed and installed, which would make it much harder to break into. There are even some new automatic openers that offer remote technology, which allows you to open or close your garage door from any location, using your smart phone.
