Law enforcement tracks down area sex offenders

Posted: Updated:

Amarillo, TX - Local law enforcement recently conducted a four-day operation to track down every registered sex offender in Potter and Randall counties.

The Amarillo Police Department, the U.S. Marshals Service, the Department of Homeland Security, the Potter and Randall County Probation Office and the Texas Department of Public Safety participated in a cooperative effort to check in on more than 500 local sex offenders.

A team of 25 officers knocked on doors to verify the registration information of each sex offender. "Sex offenders have to register their place of business, where they live, what they drive, any online identifiers like any type of social networking or any email," explained Lt. Elizabeth Brown of the APD Crimes Against Persons Unit. "And if we find that one of our offenders is not reporting their correct address or they're breaking any type of rules that they have on probation, such as living in a school zone or being around children, then we need to know about it as soon as possible."

The tracking operation helped them find out who wasn't following the rules. "We found that we have about a 96 compliance rate.," said Lt. Brown. "Of our 527 offenders at the time, we found that 18 were out of compliance and then warrants were then issued."

Lt. Brown said the most common issue they encountered was sex offenders not living at their registered address. They also discovered that five offenders are missing. Police are searing for Richard Loya, Harrison Buris Jr., Brandon Britton., Alfonso Orosco Jr. and Little Joe Enriquez. All five are currently listed as absconded.

Police are asking anyone with information about the absconded offenders to call Amarillo Crime Stoppers at 374-4400.
